Burglars steal 40 pairs of glasses from Specsavers store in Stanley

A police investigation is underway after thieves targeted a branch of Specsavers and forced it to close.

The Stanley branch of Specsavers on Front Street had to close its doors on Monday after staff discovered the theft on the morning.

The criminals made off with around 40 pairs of spectacles from the opticians chain.

It has since been confirmed that the County Durham store has reopened as usual following the incident.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to reports of a burglary at Specsavers, Front Street, Stanley shortly before 9am yesterday morning.

"The incident is believed to have occurred sometime overnight between Sunday, October 10 and Monday, October 11.

"Approximately 40 pairs of glasses are believed to have been taken in the burglary.

"Enquires are ongoing and an investigation is underway."
