Burglars have stolen the entire fire exit staircase from the outside of a Swansea building

Police in Swansea are on the lookout for a metal staircase which has been stolen from the back of a city centre salon.

The theft took place at the rear of Andrew Price in The Kingsway, Swansea.

Nothing else has been damaged and the building itself was not broken into - but the entire steel staircase which connected the fire exit on the first floor to the ground level at the rear of the salon was taken.

It is unclear when the theft took place, but it was first discovered by the salon’s manager on Tuesday morning when she came in to check the premises - the salon itself has been closed since the end of March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There is a piece of land at the back of the building which can be accessed by a van or other large vehicle, and a gate in this area was padlocked but broken open.

“The fire escape is on the first floor and the staircase leads down to the back of the property,” said salon manager Annabelle Brown.

“We’ve been closed since March due to the coronavirus lockdown so I just went in to check on the salon as we’re hoping to be able to reopen next month.

“We don’t know for sure when it happened, because you don’t really think to check if the stairs are missing! But on Tuesday I couldn’t believe it when I noticed the whole staircase had gone.

“There’s a piece of land at the back of the salon which is gated and padlocked, but whoever it was still managed to get in and dismantle the stairs.”

South Wales Police confirmed it was investigating the staircase theft and is appealing for information.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “We received a report on June 16 of the theft of a metal staircase from a premises on The Kingsway, Swansea.

“Anyone with information should contact us on 101 quoting occurrence 2000211832.”
