Burglars entered home while family of five slept and stole their vital means of transport

A family had their home entered and car stolen as they slept upstairs. Mum, Emma-Jayne Farrell, 44, said her three children had been left "petrified" as a result.

She said she might now have to put her elderly grandmother into a care home since she no longer had transport to reach and care for her.

The family's home in Elba Avenue, Taibach, Port Talbot was entered overnight between April 28 and 29 after they accidentally left the door unlocked. They realised what had happened in the morning.

"Someone came in through the front door, rummaged through my bag, leaving it in a mess, and took the car keys which are hung up on the wall, and the car," Mrs Farrell said.

"My husband is a key worker. When he realised we had been burgled and the car had gone he woke me up.

"I have three sons, aged nine, 10 and 15. It has had a terrible effect on them, My youngest won't leave my side - it's already hard enough for them not leaving the house for weeks. It's horrible seeing them petrified in their own home."

She described the car as a grey Mazda 5 with the number plate: CV10 YCJ.

Mrs Farrell is a primary carer for her grandmother, Ivy Roberts, 90, who lives in Aberavon.

Mrs Roberts lives alone and has dementia. Mrs Farrell said car rides helped her a lot during the lockdown.

Since Mrs Farrell can no longer travel to care for her grandmother, she said she might now have to be moved into a care home.

"Because I am her primary carer, I am allowed to take her out in the car and it calms her down. She likes seeing the rainbows people have put in their windows during the lockdown.

"She lives in Aberavon and now my car has gone I have no way of getting to her and she might have to go into a care home.

"She recognises my car and won't understand why I'm not there - it breaks my heart."

Mrs Farrell said the situation would be scary in normal circumstances, but the coronavirus pandemic had made her fear for her family's health.

"I've had to bleach everything because of the thought of someone else being in our home. We don't know who did this or if they have the virus.

"We also have no idea where in the house they have been and what they have touched. The thought of it goes through me."
