The New England Patriots fan who stole more than two dozen Super Bowl XLII championship rings earmarked for New York Giants’ personnel, is now telling his story of how he and his cohorts conducted the burglary.
On June 8, 2008, Sean Murphy and his crew broke into the Attleboro, Mass, offices of E.A. Dion Inc., a family-owned jeweler located two towns south of Foxborough and got away with over $2 million in jewelry, including 27 Super Bowl rings intended for the Giants.
Four months before, the Giants ruined the Patriots’ quest for an undefeated season by besting them, 17-14, in Super Bowl XLII. Patriots fans are stunned to this day over the loss.
According to Murphy, when he came across the rings during the heist, an accomplice discovered the rings, including two that were intended for Michael Strahan and Eli Manning.
He felt the Giants didn’t properly deserve the rings they had earned in the Super Bowl classic.
What Murphy and his crew stumbled upon were the remains of the 150 rings made for Giants’ staff and interested parties such as family members, specifically actress Kate Mara, the daughter of Giants’ SVP of Player Personnel Chris Mara and niece of CEO John Mara.
The Giants confirmed the fact that Kate Mara’s ring was among the missing but also stated there no issue with Manning’s or Strahan’s rings.
It all meant nothing to Murphy since he couldn’t sell any of the rings without raising any red flags. He was busted several months later and authorities recovered 27 Super Bowl rings.
