Burglar who smashed into County Durham home using a rock in daylight break-in jailed

A burglar who broke into a County Durham home in broad daylight has been jailed.

Luke Dawson and a teenage accomplice used a rock to smash a kitchen window at the house in Crook, which was unoccupied at the time.

The pair left with cash taken from a wallet, but two days later Dawson was spotted by police while driving through Crook, County Durham, while unlicensed or insured.

The 30-year-old, of Sandringham Road, Crook, admitted burglary driving other than in accordance with the licence and without insurance and was jailed for two years when he appeared before Durham Crown Court.

His co-accused, aged 17, received a 12-month youth rehabilitation order, with an £800 compensation order, when he appeared at youth court recently.

Detective sergeant Clare Lambert, from Bishop Auckland Crime Team, said: “This was a daylight burglary in which these two offenders showed a blatant disregard for their victims.

“Crimes like this will not be tolerated and, thanks to the combined efforts of our local response officers and detectives, the pair were quickly arrested.

“If members of the public have information about this type of crime they should contact us on 101 and they can be assured we will do all we can to bring the offenders to justice”.
