Burglar who has spent 9 months on the run from 3 police forces caught in Ilkeston

The burglar who was on the run for nine months and was wanted by three police forces has finally been caught and arrested.

Stuart Newton, was tracked down and detained by Derbyshire Police in his home town of Ilkeston yesterday (June 6).

Newton, who has a string of convictions including robbery and burglary, was wanted by police forces in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

He was tried in his absence this week at Leicester Crown Court for burgling a house in Ashby in 2017 and was convicted by the jury, LeicestershireLive reports.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC jailed Newton, of Critchley Street, for four and a half years.

The judge said: “I hope this case will bring this matter into sharp focus and lead to Newton being caught and sent to prison.

“I hope he won’t be able to keep himself at large much longer.

“If and when he is found he will be brought to start this sentence immediately.”

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman said: "He was wanted by ourselves, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire and we have arrested him today.

"He has been arrested on suspicion of a burglary in Ilkeston last August.

"Once he has been questioned about that he will be transferred to prison to begin his sentence."
