Burglar tried to break into Durham house with spatula and claimed he was there to fix window

A burglar has been jailed after he tried to break into a house in Durham with a spatula.

Wayne Cuthbert, 39, forced entry to a kitchen window at an address on Fieldhouse Lane on July 4 using the spatula which he had stolen from a nearby outhouse.

When the victim disturbed him, he said he was "just trying to get in the kitchen" to fix the window.

Cuthbert, from Durham, was later arrested and charged with attempted burglary.

He appeared at Durham Crown Court on Friday and was given 12 months in prison and ordered to pay a £156 victim surcharge.

PC Anna Pittam of Durham CID said: “This was a real team effort between D relief response officers and Durham City CID.

“Thankfully the offender was quickly apprehended and a thorough investigation lead to a positive result for the victim.”
