Burglar jailed after he was found acting 'suspiciously' in a garden - police recognised him from CCTV footage

A man has been jailed following a burglary in Bolton.

William Steele, 33, was captured on CCTV stealing a mobile phone from a garage in Garstang Avenue, Breightmet, on April 21.

The footage was provided to police, who then spent the week looking for Steele around Bolton.

After receiving reports of a suspicious male in a garden in Chadwick Street, The Haulgh, officers attended and discovered Steele.

He was arrested for the earlier burglary and taken into police custody.

When interviewed, Steele, of no fixed abode, tried to argue that the man in the footage was not him, and that it was a case of mistaken identity.

But he was later charged and pleaded guilty to burglary at Manchester & Salford Magistrates Court.

Yesterday, a judge sentenced him to eight weeks behind bars and ordered him to pay compensation to the victim.
