Burglar helped himself to beer and gin in people's homes on Christmas Day

A man committed a bizarre set of break-ins near Bristol last Christmas.

Daniel Mulligan was found helping himself to a drink in a B&B bar on Christmas Day.

Having been released on police bail, on Boxing Day he trashed one home and was caught in another.

Mulligan, 22 of Southwark in London, pleaded guilty to one non-domestic burglary and two house break-ins.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC (pictured below), said two doctors recommended Mulligan for mental health treatment.

The judge handed him a Hospital Order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act.

He told Mulligan: "It seems to me it would be best for your care and improvement that I do make a Hospital Order so you are treated for the conditions you are suffering from."

When Mulligan was asked if he had any objections to that course, he replied: "None at all My Lord."

Ellen McAnaw, prosecuting, said Mulligan was caught behind the bar at Parade Park Town House B&B, Bath.

When he was challenged he said "Just one gin" and helped himself to a glass of gin.

Having squirted a soda gun and barging his way out, Mulligan discarded the glass and walked off, the court heard.

It was discovered he had damaged a door frame and stolen some ear plugs from a cupboard.

Police arrested him ten minutes later but he was not interviewed due to concerns about his mental health.

Miss McAnaw said that, having been released on police bail on Boxing Day, Mulligan ransacked a home in Keynsham and caused some £400 damage.

In the break-in he stole two keys, two passports and a wallet and Christmas present T-shirt, the court heard.

Mulligan was then caught in a nearby home, drinking the househoulder's beer and telling him he didn't like it.

Police caled in found Mulligan laying under a bed and arrested him.

Both householders stated they had Christmas disrupted, one saying: "I feel sad, especially at Christmas, he was wandering the streets and breaking into people's homes rather than spending time with his family."
