Burglar distracts elderly woman by asking to use her toilet before stealing her handbag

A burglar distracted an elderly woman by asking to use her toilet before stealing her handbag in Tameside.

Police were called to the home, on Town Lane, Denton at around 11am last Monday (January 6).

The man had knocked on the door and asked where the victim's neighbour was.

He then asked to use the toilet. Once inside, he stole her handbag, which contained her purse.

Police said the man was white, between 30 and 40-years-old and of a short and slim build.

He wore a grey zipped hooded jacket with dark trousers, trainers and a bobble hat.

Martin Banks, of GMP’s Tameside division, said: “This was a despicable crime against an elderly woman who should feel safe in her home.

“We are committed to stopping burglars in their tracks and, therefore, ask anyone with information to contact us.

“I would also like to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police immediately."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01618569262, quoting 2071 of January 7.

Alternatively, call the independent charity – Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
