Burges Salmon hires employment law expert from rival

Burges Salmon has appointed Katie Russell as a partner in its employment team in Edinburgh.

The move is one of six partner appointments across the firm which include the appointment of Scottish real estate lawyer Ross Simpson in its Bristol office.

Russell moves after more than seven years at Shepherd and Wedderburn where she became a partner in December 2015. She is qualified to practise on both sides of the border and is experienced in advising companies on sensitive HR matters, strategic projects and employment litigation, with specialist knowledge of data privacy. Russell also regularly advises on corporate reorganisations, outsourcings, acquisitions and disposals, and has expertise in the financial sector.

University of Glasgow graduate Simpson is also dual qualified, having moved south from Murray Beith Murray in Edinburgh to join Burges Salmon in 2015. He specialises in advising landowners on strategic land development, rural property law and Scottish land and estates. His clients include estate owners, family trusts, farming partnerships and institutions.

The firm has also appointed Catherine de Maid and Emma Heelis-Adams as partners in its International Private Client team, Patrick Parkin in Healthcare & technology, and Matt Walker in the Dispute Resolution team.

Burges Salmon’s managing partner Roger Bull said: “Our focus at Burges Salmon remains very clear: we are fiercely proud of our independence and we are committed to being an exceptional law firm for our clients and an exceptional place to work for our people. Building on these foundations, I am delighted to announce the appointment of these six fantastic lawyers to the partnership who will each help us continue to deliver this vision.

“Helping us to continue meeting the needs of our clients in Scotland and building on our commitment to the continued growth of both the firm and our long-standing successful Scottish practice, I am really pleased to welcome Katie to the firm.”
