Burger King set to shut UK restaurants after demand plummets due to coronavirus

Burger King will close a number of its UK restaurants, it has been announced.

The fast food giant, which has several sites across Merseyside, is taking action as part of a restructuring process.

The move to close sites up and down the country comes in a direct response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen demand plummet, reports BirminghamLive.

Demand for fast food has dropped in the last few months as bars, restaurants and cafes were allowed to reopen their doors in July.

Footfall is down across city centres up and down the country, and Burger King has opted to hire advisers as a result.

AlixPartners is planning to review options for one of its subsidiary companies, which directly owns approximately 25 of the chain's outlets.

Sources said the company was examining a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) or, more likely, a pre-pack administration for the subsidiary.

This means 10 restaurants could close as a result, though there is no indication of which sites this would affect at this stage.

Burger King operates more than 500 restaurants in the UK, and the closure of sites would result in job losses, it is understood.

The job losses would add to the more than 180,000 tracked by the PA news agency since the start of lockdown in March.

Restaurant chains have been particularly hard hit by the coronavirus crisis, with Cafe Rouge owner Casual Dining Group filing its own notice to appoint administrators in recent weeks.
