Burger King reopens Bristol restaurant which staff feared might close permanently

Burger King has reopened a Bristol restaurant which its staff feared was at risk of permanent closure.

In September employees of the fast food chain's branch in The Galleries raised their concerns that it might never reopen, after other restaurants in the food court were back up and running.

Speaking to Bristol Live, a furloughed worker claimed staff had been told eight to 10 jobs were at risk.

At the time he said: "No one seems to know what’s happening whatsoever. A lot of us have been preparing for redundancy and looking for jobs elsewhere.

"With us not being kept in the loop, my colleagues and I have been stressing over the situation all throughout lockdown.

"We have families to provide for and for them to tell us they have no idea what is going to happen is just ridiculous for a global company."

But Burger King allayed fears by saying they were no plans to close the site, and yesterday (October 28) the company stayed true to its word by reopening the restaurant for dine-in and takeaway.

Customers won’t be able to choose from the full Burger King menu but popular options such as the Chicken Royale, Bacon Double Cheeseburger and Whopper are all available.

A number of procedures have been put in place to safeguard the health of both employees and customers following "detailed operational testing," said a spokesperson.

These include PPE such as masks and gloves for staff, stringent cleaning measures, contactless delivery options via Deliveroo and Just Eat and training for all staff on hygiene and social distancing measures.

Soco Nunez, Communications Director at Burger King UK, said: "We are so pleased to be able to open more restaurants this week and slowly but surely get back to ‘normal’, ensuring all safety measures are in place.”
