Burger King launches social distancing crowns to make sure customers keep apart

Our favourite fast food places have been firmly shut since the coronavirus lockdown began in March, but finally things seem to be changing.

The last few days saw several fast food chains re-open their drive-thrus for customers, including Burger King and McDonalds.

And while hospitality venues are thought to be staying closed in the UK until at least July 4, we might have just been given some idea of what the re-opening of Burger King restaurants could eventually look like.

In Germany, the burger chain has launched hilarious 'social distancing crowns' to keep their customers apart while they tuck into their burgers and fries.

Burger King's US account took to social media to share a snap of two people wearing the giant cardboard crowns.

They captioned the post: "Distancing, but make it fashion."

The tweet has gone viral, garnering thousands of likes and hundreds of retweets, with many asking where they could get themselves one of the quirky head pieces.

But their hopes were dashed when Burger King replied: "Just take a quick walk to Germany."

Speaking to Business Insider, a spokesperson for Burger King said: "We wanted to reinforce the rules of high safety and hygiene standards that the BK restaurants are following.

"The do-it-yourself social-distance crown was a fun and playful way to remind our guests to practice social distancing while they are enjoying food in the restaurants."

The chain have also shared other amusing social distancing ideas across Europe, including selling a 'Social Distancing Whopper' in Italy.

The new burger is packed full of onions in the hope that the smell of the burger - and the person's breath after eating it - will keep other people away.

Fast food chains aren't the only places getting creative during lockdown.

In Schwerin, Germany, Jacqueline Roth, the owner of Cafe Rothe has customers wearing hats topped with swimming pool noodles to ensure they're social distancing while eating.

Other establishments in the US, such as Virginia’s three-Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington, have reportedly put mannequins in empty seats to ensure people can't sit next to each other.
