Burger King announces new Cardiff restaurant weeks after closing city centre branch

Burger King is opening a brand new restaurant in Cardiff, it has announced today.

It comes just weeks after the fast-food chain closed the Cardiff Queen Street restaurant.

The new branch will be located at Dunleavy Retail Park, creating 30 new job opportunities in the local area. Five managerial roles are currently open for application with 25 crew positions being released in early May.

People Director of Burger King UK, Jeremy Wright, said: "During what has been a very challenging year for many businesses, we are delighted to be creating new job and career opportunities in the area, and look forward to welcoming 30 new starters into the Burger King family, at our new Cardiff restaurant.

"We continue to be bold and ambitious in our growth plans across both locations and job opportunities."

An official opening date is yet to be announced.

Back in March Burger King shut the doors of the long-standing Cardiff Queen Street branch, which had been around since 1992.

The chain said affected staff members would all be transferred to alternative restaurants and that it had "plans in the pipeline" to open more Burger King branches in the future.

In a statement at the time, a Burger King spokeswoman said: "Amid challenging times for many businesses, we can confirm that the Cardiff Queen Street Burger King location has sadly closed.

"We are working with the affected staff members, who will all be transferred to alternative restaurants. As a business we will always endeavour to facilitate this where possible.

"While there have been some changes and closures across our network, our restaurant located at St John Street in Cardiff is still open for business. We have also continued our ambitious growth plans by opening restaurants at Waterfront Retail Park, Barry and Cross Hands Retail Park, Llanelli in 2020, with plans for even more in the pipeline. We will share more information when we can."
