Burger chain promising 'the good kind of gluttony' set to open in Nottingham

Good food, messy fingers and juicy burgers are in store when gourmet burger restaurant Fat Hippo lands in Nottingham.

The chain, which has five branches in the north of England including Durham and Sheffield, will open its sixth site in Hockley.

Fat Hippo describes itself as serving “the good kind of gluttony.”

Food lovers can salivate over Stinky Pete (a double beef patty topped with blue cheese, onion jam and jalapeños), Hangover lll (buttermilk chicken, cheese, smoked bacon, lettuce, pickles, BBQ sauce and ranch) and 4x4 (four patties topped with streaky bacon, cheese and Fat Hippo burger sauce).

Vegans will be spoilt for choice with five burgers to choose from. The plant-based patties come with names such as Bloody Harrelson, Oprah Sin-Free and Notorious VFC 2.0.

As well as burgers, there's starters of Trash Browns (deep fried tater tots topped with liquid cheese and Cajun onion strings) and Dirty Waffles (waffle fries with Fat Hippo sauce and bacon bits) plus sides of fries, salad, slaw and 14 sauces, five of which are vegan.

A children's menu is also available.

"Recognised for our quality ingredients and quirky flavours, we're all about ‘good old fashioned, roll up your sleeves and get it all over your face’ food," they say.

"As well as our signature beef and boneless buttermilk chicken patties, we’ve also got a carefully designed range of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options available."

Fat Hippo will be moving into Broad Street - in the former home of two businesses that didn't stick around for long. The last occupant Hockley Rebel was a real ale bar which opened at the end of 2018 and closed within 12 months.

Before that Mexican restaurant El Capo lasted just a year.

The Fat Hippo chain began in Jesmond, near Newcastle, in 2010.

Burger lovers are already spoilt for choice in Nottingham city centre, with Annie's Burger Shack, Five Guys, Ohannes, which opened during lockdown, and BOHNS Best Burgers, which is just doors away from the new Fat Hippo site.
