A 44-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for illegal gun and drug possession.

Efren Gutierrez pleaded guilty to federal drug and firearm charges earlier this year, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

Law enforcement found the narcotics and semiautomatic handgun in his Burbank home in December 2017, prosecutors said. The gun, which was found in a diaper bag, was loaded and had a .45-caliber magazine attached to it.

Authorities also found cocaine, marijuana and 98 percent pure methamphetamine in his home, prosecutors said.

Gutierrez was previously convicted of multiple felonies in court and wasn’t legally allowed to own a gun, prosecutors said. In a plea agreement, he admitted he kept the weapon to protect his drug distribution business.

He remains in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate records.
