Burbank fire leaves one dead, officials say

Nov. 06--One person has died following a fire in south suburban Burbank late Tuesday night.

About 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, fire crews were called to a single-story house in the the 8600 block of South Major Avenue, authorities said.

Firefighters searched the home after extinguishing the blaze and found the remains of a male located in the front room of the house, according to a statement from Burbank police Division Chief Michael Dudlo.

There are no signs anyone else was injured in the fire, and authorities are still trying to determine if the person who was killed is the homeowner, Dudlo said.

Burbank police, the Cook County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois state fire marshal's office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and the death, Burbank police said.

Officials said there were no indications that anyone else was injured.

The identity of the victim, described as a white male, has not been established due to the body being burned beyond recognition, according to Burbank police. Officials took DNA specimens from the victim, as well as the homeowner's family, to determine the identity of the person. The analysis is being done by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab.

According to the Cook County medical examiner's office the cause of death has yet to be determined. Toxicology results are pending. The office said there were no signs of foul play or trauma on the body.
