Local community groups could be sizzling sausages and onions on the BBQ and cracking open soft drinks for Canberrans at Bunnings stores all around the city this weekend.

The news from ACT Health that the sangas are officially allowed to go ahead from today will surely be welcomed by many Canberrans, who might be spending the weekend catching up on some much-needed retail therapy.

Having reached 80 per cent full vaccination rate for over-12s on Monday, territorians are now able to shop in store.

Essential retailers that have been operating under click-and-collect are also able to reopen to customers.

The strict density limits of one person for every four square metres applies to all shops.

ACT Health has warned also that Bunnings will have to abide by strict COVID-19 rules for Canberrans to enjoy a sanga.

"Risk mitigation strategies will need to be in place including ensuring that people do not gather and physical distancing is maintained at all times," ACT Health said in a statement.

"Masks [must be] worn by BBQ volunteers, and food [needs to be] prepared in a COVID-safe way with good hand hygiene."
