Bungling burglar caught after DNA found on fishcake he ate during thieving spree

A bungling burglar was snagged after he left his DNA on a leftover fishcake he tucked into at his victim's home.

Jan Gina crept through a cat flap and ate the half-eaten treat left on a table in the property in the middle of the night.

The 20-year-old also nicked wine, clothes, a handbag, bank cards and then fled.

But Kent Live says police found the burglar's DNA on the fishcake and he was eventually found hiding in a wardrobe in a disused building four days later.

Gina was caged for two years and four months today after admitting burglary and possession of cannabis.

When he was arrested in May, Gina was in possession of five bags of herbal cannabis.

Canterbury Crown Court heard the crook at first denied the offences and claimed he didn't like fish.

However Gina, from Folkestone, Kent, later changed his plea.

He had squeezed into the property in Folkestone as the homeowner slept on May 9.

Speaking after sentencing, DC Beth Gumley, of Kent Police , said: "Gina crept around the property while the victims were inside, asleep and completely unaware.

"Luckily we were able to return the stolen items and Gina has now been imprisoned.

"Burglary is such an intrusive crime and the impact on victims is not underestimated.

"This is why we will do everything within our power to seek justice and ensure those breaking the law are put before the courts."
