Bundoran RNLI rescue runaway horse from sea off Murvagh beach in Co Donegal

A lifeboat crew faced a night-mare situation when a runaway horse bolted from its owner and ran into the sea.

Bundoran RNLI hoofed it to the aid of the stricken animal off Murvagh beach in Donegal on Monday evening.

Lifeguards on duty called Malin Head Coast Guard for help after the horse made a dash for the ocean just after 5.40pm.

By the time the lifeboat arrived, the adventurous equine was more than a mile out to sea but thankfully the volunteer crew coaxed it back to shore where its owner was anxiously waiting.

The rescue mission took almost one hour.

Footage taken by the RNLI crew's helmet cameras shows the horse swimming while laden down with full riding tack.

RNLI lifeboat helm Killian O'Kelly commented: "This was another callout with a good outcome. Animals are as prone as people to get in trouble in the water and we were glad to be able to help out on this occasion.

"Remember if you see someone in difficulty on the coast call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard."
