Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram didn’t celebrate his goal on Sunday in a Bundesliga match against Union Berlin. Thuram instead used his goal to send a message.
He took a knee on the pitch as an apparent gesture of solidarity amid the U.S. protests of the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis on Monday. Thuram, a native of France, hasn’t addressed the media to explain what his gesture meant, but Gladbach’s team Twitter account shared an image of the striker kneeling with a caption, “No explanation needed.”
Colin Kaepernick, of course, kneeled during the national anthem as a silent protest against racial injustice. It cost him his NFL career.
It’s clear that the death of Floyd and the ensuing protests have moved the entire world — and not just the U.S.
