Bundesliga's return date confirmed as Leeds United wait on Monday's Premier League crunch talks

The Bundesliga will return on May 16 amid the coronavirus crisis and the German Football Association has confirmed.

Germany's government gave the green light for football to return on Wednesday but and left the decision of the return date to the DFL.

On Thursday, the 36 clubs of the upper two tiers agreed on the earliest possible date, in order to complete the season by June 30.

The Bundesliga was suspended on the eve of matchday 26 on March 13 but German authorities have remained committed throughout to completing the 2019/20 season.

All games will be held behind closed doors amid a ban on mass gatherings in Germany until August 31 due to COVID-19.

Borussia Dortmund's Revierderby against Schalke is the headlines fixture for the first matchday back, with Bayern Munich away at Union Berlin.

The Premier League will next meet on Monday to continue discussions about a potential return to action, with Boris Johnson reportedly set to relax lockdown measures on Sunday.

The issues of relegation remains the biggest stumbling block between clubs, with those at the bottom of the table unhappy about playing matches at neutral grounds.
