Bundesliga restart decision delayed as wait continues for closed door approval

A decision over whether the Bundesliga season can resume will not be made until next week.

German football chiefs were awaiting the outcome of government talks on Thursday having signalled their readiness for a return to action.

However, reports from Germany now claim they will be forced to wait until at least next Wednesday.

League bosses targeted May 9 as a potential date for a closed door resumption but May 16 is now considered more realistic.

Bayern Munich lead Borussia Dortmund by four points at the league summit with Paderborn, Werder Breman and Fortuna Dusseldorf occupying the relegation places.

The delayed call follows news Paris Saint-Germain are poised to be crowned Ligue 1 champions, pending approval from the LFP board and ratification at a general assembly in May.

It was announced on Wednesday that the French season was over with a decision on title winners and relegation to follow. The country's government declared that restarting football was not a priority in its coronavirus response.

PSG are now set to claim another league crown while Toulouse, Amiens and Nimes will be relegated.

Toulouse have already reacted furiously to the development, threatening legal action against LFP if the solution is finalised.

In an open letter, club president Olivier Sadran branded the decision an "abuse of power".

He wrote: "I want to forcefully make my position clear: any decision to relegate a team based on the provisional classification taken from the 27th or 28th matchday taken against Toulouse would be unjust, unfair and unfounded in law… An abuse of power.

"Consequently, a relegation pronounced on the basis of the provisional classification at the end of the 28th or 27th matchday would constitute an unacceptable departure from the principles of fairness and sports ethics of which the LFP and the FFF are the guarantors. Any unilateral decision to relegate would constitute a sanction not provided for by the applicable regulations.

"In light of all of the above, TFC’s request is simply that the FFF and LFP abide by their own rules and act as guarantors of ethical and fair sports. Any other decision, which does not allow TFC to assert its right to opportunities of continued sporting and fairness, would be immediately challenged before the relevant courts."
