Bundesliga club make announcement on Liverpool duo with Anfield future uncertain

Two Liverpool players are set to return to the club this summer following loan spells in Germany, but their respective futures remain uncertain.

Union Berlin have confirmed that Loris Karius and Taiwo Awoniyi will return to Anfield following the end of their loan stints.

The pair were sent on loan to the Bundesliga outfit last summer and have had relatively mixed experiences away from Merseyside.

Karius featured just four times in the league for Union Berlin, used as second choice goalkeeper to Andreas Luthe, but did keep three clean sheets in that time.

Meanwhile striker Awoniyi made 21 appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring five goals and providing three assists for his team mates.

The futures of both Karius and Awoniyi are up in the air as they return to Merseyside, with both unlikely to have long term futures at the club.

Karius is contracted at Anfield until next summer, while Awoniyi’s deal still has two years left to run.

The ECHO understands that Liverpool would demand a fee of at least £8m to part ways with Awoniyi.

The Nigerian was granted a UK work permit and several English clubs have registered their interest in the striker.

It has been reported by Goal that initial discussions have been held with Fulham, West Brom and Stoke City, with the Reds also fielding enquiries from Union Berlin, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.
