Bulwell man tells how he's walked 10,000km around Nottingham playing Pokémon Go

Bulwell man Thomas Young has walked 10,000km for his love of Pokémon Go.

The 37-year-old father of two said his passion for the game even led to him playing it on his honeymoon in October 2017.

He's walked so far playing the game during the last two and a half years that, if he had walked in a straight line, he could have made it to Beijing.

He believes he is probably one of the most prolific Pokémon Go players in the area, and can be recognised by his fellow Pokémon Go players - known as trainers - through his trademark backpack and his portable phone chargers.

His passion for the augmented reality mobile game, where players capture Pokémon and battle other players, has taken him to parts of Nottinghamshire he didn’t know existed.

He said: “I love food and I love playing games, so it’s an easy way to stop me from going over 14 stone.

“I like it because it’s the line between reality and gaming, it’s like you are augmenting the world around you.

“You can just pick it up and play on your way into work, or even on your lunch break.

“For example I know the Capital One building is a Pokémon gym,” said Mr Young.

A Pokémon gym is a real-world location where rivals can use their Pokémon to take over the gym by fighting other players' Pokémon.

Mr Young added: “Before Pokémon Go I wouldn’t have been able to tell you where I was half the time but - but  because of it I feel like I’ve learnt loads about this city.

From bars and nightlife, to culture and restaurants: These are the things you love most about living in Nottingham

“The River Leen runs through Bulwell town centre, but I never knew that it runs all the way to the NG2 Business Park. Now that walk for me would take an hour and a half at a good pace, to give you an idea of how far that river runs.

“So many people walk around paying no attention to the world around them but, because of the game, I have to pay attention – usually to avoid walking into something.”

Mr Young also said that the game educates players on local history.

“People were taught about these things in school when they were young and it would go in one ear and out the other.

“Now they have a reason to go to these places and learn something.

“For example, I never knew that the person who founded AC Milan (Herbert Kilpin) lived on Mansfield Road, but the game took me to this plaque on a building there and told me all about it.”

Mr Young said he usually does around 30,000 steps in one day playing Pokémon.

“I used it when I went on my honeymoon because I was given a free pass to play for a day when we were in Portaventura, while my wife spent the day by the pool.

“I walked around the town fighting gyms and learnt about the history of the place. I went down to the harbor and read the information at each stop.

“At home, my wife sometimes gets mad about it but I make sure I get up early and do any garden work or anything before I go out or go to one of the meet-ups.”
