Bulwell fire: Warning over 'risk of asbestos in smoke' as emergency services deal with building fire

Firefighters have urged residents to shut their doors and windows after concerns were raised over a risk of asbestos in smoke as they continue to deal with a building fire.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service issued the warning as 12 fire crews tackle the blaze at a garage in Thames Street, which was reported at 11.13am today (Tuesday, January 4).

The service said in a tweet: "Due to a risk of asbestos in the smoke please avoid the area around Thames Street Bulwell and we ask local residents to close their doors and windows."

Pumps from across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are in attendance at the fire, which is expected to go on for some time, according to a fire service spokesperson.

This includes teams from from Stockhill, Arnold, London Road, Eastwood, Ilkeston, Belper and Mansfield.

Nottinghamshire Police are also present.

In a tweet confirming the involvement of the crews, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "11:13am, crews from Stockhill Station, Arnold Station, London Road Station, Eastwood Station and Ilkeston are in attendance at building fire on Thames Street, Bulwell. One hose reel is in use at present."
