Bully told partner he would hit her in front of children

A man who lost his job has been handed a hefty fine by a sheriff for making drunken threats against his girlfriend in front of two young children.

Ewan McGoldrick, 35, warned Joanne McGuire, a mum-of-two, that he was going to attack her if she phoned the cops adding, “And your weans will see it,” during a heated argument over his drinking.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard McGoldrick was sozzled at 3pm when he turned up at the property in Motehill Road, Gallowhill, on February 7, this year.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Dana Barclay said: “The accused is in a relationship with his partner Ms McGuire, who has two young children.

“At around 3pm on the day of the incident, she was in her home with her children when the accused attended.

“He was intoxicated at that time and continued to consume alcohol in the living  room.

“At around 4pm they had a disagreement and a verbal argument continued where he proceeded to shout and threaten Ms McGuire.

“He said, ‘You phone the polis and I will make sure I will do it right and your weans will see  it.”

The mum was fearful of McGoldrick and reported him to police who attended and found him in the kitchen still downing booze later that afternoon.

The bully appeared at court where he pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner where he shouted, swore and uttered threats of violence at his partner.

Defence agent David Nicholson said his client had been made redundant that day and had gone out and “had a couple of beers.”

He said: “This is a very unfortunate incident.

“He was made redundant on that day and having lost his job and worried about his future, he has gone out and had a couple of beers.

“He has then gone to the house and continued to drink where an argument began, and he has reacted in the way
described.

“He very much regrets the matter and has pleaded guilty to the offence.”

Mr Nicholson added McGoldrick and Ms McGuire are keen to continue their relationship.

Sheriff David Pender told McGoldrick, who has a previous conviction for domestic abuse: “Notwithstanding your last domestic matter, I am prepared to deal with this by way of a financial penalty.”

He handed him a £370 fine.
