'Kidding the public' - Nottingham Forest legend on why he can't stand modern football

It is fair to say Gareth Bale did not take too kindly to being asked about his future minutes after Wales had been dumped out of Euro 2020.

Millions watched on as the much discussed Real Madrid forward groaned at the question and exited stage left.

So step forward John McGovern, who abruptly ended his interview with Nottinghamshire Live with a more good natured 'thank you very much' after describing modern football punditry as 'bullsh*t' and some players as actors.

Fortunately, McGovern was in good form as he abruptly left to sign autographs for waiting fans at the Samantha Birtles Trophy on Sunday.

Here's what Nottingham Forest's double European Cup winning captain said on the game today before his mic drop moment.

"You know, I see a right-back pass into a centre-half, who passes it to the other centre-half. He passes it to the left-back, who gives it to the centre-half again," he said on this week's Garibaldi Red podcast.

"He gives it to the other centre-half and then to the right-back again. Back to the centre-half, who decides there is nothing on and it goes to the goalkeeper, who kicks 40 yards into the air to a centre forward with three defenders around him.

"I'm not a genius football academic, but if I did that the manager would take me off the field of play for not taking the responsibility of trying to create something.

"The ones on TV who tell me this is good possession football, they've got another coming because it's absolute bullsh*t.

"It's about time they stopped kidding the public and if the actors who go down pretending to be injured get any worse, influencing kids at school, supporters and referees - it's about time they grew up and acted like men because it's supposed to be a man's game."

So you don't enjoy watching football anymore John?

"No, because of those reason's. Thank you very much."

And with that he left to make the day of fans, young fans in fact who were waiting patiently for his autograph.
