The Bulls and Pelicans are engaged in active discussions about a trade centered on Nikola Mirotic, sources confirmed.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the deal had hit a snag, although the teams remained in discussions.
In one form of the proposed deal, the Bulls would receive former Bull Omer Asik, another player and a first-round pick. It's unknown what kind of protections might be on the first-round pick. Asik's deal is guaranteed for $11.2 million next season but carries only a $3 million guarantee for 2019-20.
Since the moment Bobby Portis broke two of his facial bones with an Oct. 17 practice punch, Mirotic has wanted to be away from his teammate. He also wants to start. But Mirotic also wants the $12.5 million team option for next season guaranteed on his two-year, $25 million deal. He can agree not to be dealt if the option isn't picked up.
The Pelicans are hesitant for now to guarantee Mirotic's second year because of luxury tax concerns moving forward. They hope to re-sign DeMarcus Cousins in free agency.
If Mirotic is traded without his option being picked up, he loses his Bird rights, which could cost him money moving forward. The Pelicans may then have to re-sign Mirotic using an exception, which would be less than the $12.5 million he is due.
Last season, Mirotic called Rajon Rondo his favorite all-time teammate along with Pau Gasol. He would be reunited with Rondo in New Orleans. The Pelicans are motivated to make additions after losing Cousins to a season-ending Achilles injury.
"He's very honest," Mirotic said of Rondo last season. "He's talking all the time, supporting before the game, after the game, during the practice. He's always positive. Even if something is not going well, he's trying to help young players."
