Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg shows some game at BMW Championship Pro-Am

Sept. 16--New Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg made two birdies Wednesday at the BMW Championship Pro-Am but could not recall on which holes.

"I was just out there hacking around," he said, later joking: "I was in the zone."

Hoiberg has some game, having recently shot a 73 at Royal Melbourne Country Club in Long Grove, where he was a member while playing for the Bulls from 1999-2003.

Asked about the strongest part of his game, he replied: "Depends on the day. Not putting. People anticipate that because I can shoot, I'm a good putter. But it does not translate at all."

The best golfer in his family is 16-year-old son, Jack, who is a 3-handicap.

"He beats me every time now," Hoiberg said, "which is a little humiliating."

Hoiberg almost missed his 7:10 a.m. tee time Wednesday at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, running to the 10th tee after hitting traffic on his ride in from the western suburbs. He put his first two drives into a stream right of the fairway.

He recovered, though, and said he loves golf because "it's the one place I can relax a little bit with the stresses of the job. I enjoy being outside."

Bulls training camp starts in two weeks, and Hoiberg has been watching Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic play for Spain in the European basketball championship.

"Pau hit six 3s against Poland a couple days ago," Hoiberg said. "He and Niko played really well on the floor together (Tuesday) against Greece."

And regarding Derrick Rose, accused of sexual misconduct in a lawsuit, Hoiberg said: "It's a situation right now that there's not a lot to say about."

Rose, Hoiberg said, will be at training camp.
