The Bulls have filled the assistant coach opening left by former longtime Bulls assistant coach Pete Myers’ resignation from the organization.
Former Rockets assistant Roy Rogers has agreed to a three-year deal to join the Bulls as an assistant coach. Rogers’ contract lines up with Jim Boylen’s multi-year extension to remain the Bulls’ head coach.
Rogers, 45, spent the last three seasons on Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni’s staff before becoming the second of four assistant coaches who were told they wouldn’t receive a new contract for the 2019-20 season. He also had stints with the Nets (2013-14) and Wizards (2014-16) as an assistant coach after spending time with the Pistons, Celtics and coaching in G League during the mid-2000s.
Rogers, a 6-9 forward in his playing days, starred at Alabama from 1992-96 and averaged 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.9 blocks during his senior season. He was named to the All-SEC First Team in 1995-96 after leading the conference in blocks.
Rogers was selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies with the 22nd overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. He averaged 6.6 points and 4.7 rebounds in 22.5 minutes during his rookie season with the Grizzlies.
Rogers was acquired by the Bulls in the Scottie Pippen sign-and-trade deal with the Rockets in 1999 before getting waived. He played 137 games from 1996-2000 with the Grizzlies, Celtics, Raptors and Nuggets. Rogers averaged 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in his NBA career before playing overseas and finishing his playing career in Poland.
