Bullpen gives up late runs as Brewers fall to Diamondbacks, 4-2

MILWAUKEE _ A roller coaster Friday night ended in disappointing fashion for the Milwaukee Brewers.

After fighting most of the game to grab the lead and finally succeeding in the eighth inning, the bullpen gave up runs in both the ninth and 10th as the Brewers fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-2, at Miller Park.

Corey Knebel was within one out of recording his fourth save when Chris Iannetta tied the game with a home run to left-center. Then, Wily Peralta surrendered a pair of runs in the 10th to extend Milwaukee's season-high losing streak to five games.

Junior Guerra went 52/3 innings in his first appearance since April 3, Jett Bandy homered to tie the game in the seventh and Hernan Perez singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth for the Brewers.

The offense came after the game took an interesting and dramatic turn in the bottom of the sixth.

With the Brewers trailing, 1-0, Eric Thames drew a one-out walk from Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley and with two outs, Travis Shaw singled to put runners on the corners for Domingo Santana.

With the count, 1-1, Godley's next offering squirted about 10 feet to the left of catcher Iannetta. Thames bolted for home and slid in head-first, with Iannetta tossing to a covering Godley at the plate.

Home-plate umpire Jim Reynolds called Thames out and Counsell challenged, only to have the call stand after a review of 1 minute, 59 seconds as boos rained down from the crowd of 25,391.

With the inning now over, Counsell charged out of the dugout and voiced his displeasure vehemently with Reynolds, who wasted no time in ejecting him for the first time this season and the sixth time of his career.

Carlos Torres pitched a scoreless seventh, then the Brewers snapped an 18-inning scoreless streak in the bottom half when Bandy launched a one-out homer to left off former Brewer Jorge De La Rosa on an 0-2 pitch.

Milwaukee finally grabbed the lead in the eighth when Andrew Chafin issued a leadoff walk to Jonathan Villar, who advanced to second on a Thames groundout.

Perez, up next, sent the first pitch he saw into right to score Villar and put the Brewers ahead, 2-1.

Knebel opened the ninth with two quick outs before Iannetta sent a 98-mph fastball over the fence in left-center to knot the score at 2-2.

Chris Owings opened the 10th with a double and he eventually came in to score the winning run on a wild pitch by Peralta (5-3). Jake Lamb then doubled in Arizona's final run.

The Brewers dropped to 2-3 in extra-inning games this season.

Guerra was making his first start since opening day on April 3, when he strained his right calf in the third inning attempting to drop down a bunt. Originally expected to miss 6-8 weeks, Guerra returned right about in the middle of that timeframe and with two minor league rehab starts under his belt.

He struck out David Peralta two batters into the game and had just recorded his fourth punchout in the fourth when he made his first and only big mistake _ leaving a 2-1 slider up enough to Lamb, who crushed it into the second deck in right to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.

Guerra got into the sixth and ended his night after getting Brandon Drury swinging for his fifth strikeout. He allowed three hits, the one earned run and three walks in a 98-pitch outing.

Godley, Guerra's counterpart, was tough on the Brewers as well.

The right-hander limited Milwaukee to just five hits _ all singles _ and a walk while striking out six over six innings.
