A teenager has died a week after being punched in the head by bullies at school, hitting a pillar as he fell.
The tragic 13-year-old, named Diego, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night, officials in California confirmed.
Two boys have been arrested on connection with the sickening assault, which was captured in mobile phone footage at Landmark Middle School in Moreno Valley.
After the punch Diego fell backward, hitting his head on a concrete pillar last Monday.
He was rushed to hospital, but medics were unable to save his life.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, classmates claimed bullying was rife at the school.
In a statement the Moreno Valley Sheriff's Office said: "The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is saddened to share the 13-year-old victim from Landmark Middle School was pronounced clinically dead last night as a result of injuries sustained in the attack on Monday, September 16, 2019.
"Rigorous medical intervention and treatment efforts at an area hospital were unsuccessful."
The schoolboy's organs will be donated to save other lives.
Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said, the San Diego Union Tribute reports : “This is a life-changing tragedy for everyone involved, including the staff and students at Landmark Middle School."
Horrified classmates told KTLA that Diego had been bullied on social media, and said it was a problem at the school.
One said: "It’s really tough because there’s so many fights here, and they don’t do anything about it. The security’s all over the school, but they take forever to come."
Following the tragedy, the school said it has brought in behaviour specialists and will work with mental health experts.
