Bulldozers move in at Newcastle United's training ground as improvements get under way at Benton

Newcastle United's training ground improvements have now started with work on the main building and pitch side of the complex under way.

Work to build a significant extension to the side of the training ground is now being carried out with improvements expected in time for the start of the new season. Images of the former outdoor dining area near the canteen being bulldozed to make way for a new walkway on to the training fields have started to appear on Twitter.

The work will see a revamped physio and sport science rooms, new changing rooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen, extended dining room, new presentation room and players’ lounge and hydro pools for the Toon squad.

Amanda Staveley had said last season: "We have had other facilities go up at other football clubs so we have looked at other clubs' facilities quite enviously."

A planning application for a revamp of their Darsley Park training ground to North Tyneside Council had been submitted in May. However, the club's long-term vision is still to build a brand new training ground.

It's understood that Eddie Howe is delighted that the club will have a new look training ground to help entice new signings through the door this summer. Incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth started work last week after his long drawn out arrival from Brighton.
