Bulldozers move in at former Prestwick police station

These are the dramatic pictures that show the end is nigh for Prestwick’s historic police station.

Bulldozers arrived to flatten the old constabulary office and social work base on Friday.

Protestors had made a bid to protect the 116-year-old building on Prestwick Main Street.

But after the police left in 2012 a deal was done for the council to buy the whole building.

Construction work on 12 new affordable homes is set to begin in March.

It is estimated the new development will cost £1.75 million to build, taking a year to complete.

Prestwick residents have voiced concern about whether the new housing will be in the right place.

And a petition was organised to save the old jail and office, which are hailed as part of Prestwick’s character.

Protesters had hoped the site could be redeveloped in a similar way to a project in Ardrossan, which saw a station rebuilt while maintaining its original features.

But South Ayrshire Council bought the station from Police Scotland to make room for the development.

The old inscription in the red sandstone above the door, which reads ‘County Constabulary Station’, could be saved to preserve the history.
