Bulldozers move in after sink hole mayhem

Old Swan was unrecognisable after a large sink hole opened up in the middle of a busy road.

Some homes were evacuated after a section of road collapsed at the junction of Green Lane and Prescot Road late last night.

The fire service has said a ruptured water main is the suspected cause of the large hole, subsequent flooding and loss of water and power to nearby homes.

Some locals appeared to be bewildered by the drama on their doorstep, which has ground the area to a halt.

Workers and engineers are working at the scene now.

The fire service said in a statement: “The incident has generated running water which is affecting the junction of Prescot Road 500 metres west and Green Lane 100 metres north.

“Road closures are in place and several properties in the area are being affected.

“The suspected cause is a ruptured water main but this is not yet confirmed.

“Crews are working to restrict the flow of water and utilities companies are in attendance.”

A massive cordon has also been erected next to the 15ft hole with a number of bus diversions still in place.
