Bulldozers about to flatten buildings in Ayrshire Main Street

An old police station and social work office are set to be demolished next month.

Bulldozers will flatten  the Prestwick Main Street site to make way for 12 new affordable homes.

It is expected construction work would start on the new builds in March 2020 and take a year to finish.

It is estimated the new development would cost £1.75 million to build.

South Ayrshire Council’s Leadership Panel approved for South West Hub (SWHub) to assist in the procurement and delivery of the project at a meeting last week.

The tender process for a demolition contractor is underway.

The council's planning department have rejected two previous schemes for the plot at 12 to 14 Main Street. But an agreement has now been reached on a design brief according, which is in line with planning rules, according to a council paper.

Consultation would take place with residents once plans are developed.

The council bought the old station from Police Scotland to make room for the affordable development.

Officials said failure to deliver the housing may lead to the council losing a subsidy and not being able to increase numbers of affordable homes.

Prestwick residents have voiced concern about whether the new housing would be in the right place.
A petition was also organised to save the old jail and social work office, which are hailed as part of Prestwick’s character.

A call was made for the buildings to be used for other purposes instead of being knocked down.
