Magpies' AFL pick swap to help land Daicos

Collingwood are an important step closer to landing AFL father-son prospect Nick Daicos after swapping a suite of draft picks with Gold Coast.

On an otherwise quiet opening day of the annual trade period, the Suns sent picks 22, 46, 58, 79 and a future fourth-round selection to the Magpies in exchange for future second, third and fourth-round picks.

The deal gives Collingwood a strong enough hand in this year's draft to cover the value index points required to match a bid for highly-rated teenager Daicos, should it come in the early first round as expected.

The Magpies are also keen on bringing in Patrick Lipinski (Bulldogs) and Nathan Kreueger (Geelong) during the trade period, which runs until October 13.

Daicos has been rated a possible No.1 pick and is widely regarded as one of the draft class' top three players, along with South Adelaide gun Jason Horne-Francis and Western Bulldogs father-son prospect Sam Darcy.

Collingwood have committed to matching any bid for Daicos, whose brother Josh is already at the club.

The siblings are sons of Magpies legend Peter Daicos.

Meanwhile, Western Bulldogs tall Lewis Young has requested a trade to Carlton as the Blues look to further bolster their stocks under new coach Michael Voss.

The versatile Young has played 24 games for the Bulldogs after debuting in 2017, but has been unable to lock down a regular position.

The 22-year-old played mainly as an under-sized ruckman this year, but was dropped for Stefan Martin when the veteran returned from injury and missed the Bulldogs' preliminary and grand finals.

Young could look to nail down a spot in Carlton's defence, instead of in the ruck where he has been monstered by some of the competition's premier big men.

Carlton have already secured Sydney Swans midfielder George Hewett as a restricted free agent and will facilitate a deal for Fremantle young gun Adam Cerra before the end of the trade period.

The Dockers are locked in negotiations with Geelong over contracted speedster Jordan Clark.

St Kilda's Seb Ross has turned his back on free agency and recommitted to the club on a new two-year deal, while the Saints are open to trading utility Ben Long in order to bolster their hand at this year's draft.

Sydney are determined to play hardball for Jordan Dawson, who has requested a trade to Adelaide.

Dawson enjoyed a career-best season in 2021, finishing third in the Swans' best-and-fairest award.

"We had big plans for Jordan, and it was reflected (in the) offer that we put in front of Jordan," Swans chief executive Tom Harley said.

"If there is to be a negotiation there, we would expect that to be respectful and to reflect his standing at our club."
