Bulldogs grab win for Reynolds as Knights miss last-minute penalty

The Canterbury Bulldogs have beaten Newcastle 20-18 in a crazy conclusion to round 18 at Belmore.

Look back at the scores and stats from Sunday's lone football contest.

The Bulldogs were out to get Josh Reynolds a win in his last game at Belmore as a Bulldog before joining the Wests Tigers next season.

Early on, the home side dominated proceedings, making hundreds more run metres than their opponents, and a string of line breaks as Newcastle struggled to contain the home side.

Kerrod Holland opened the scoring in the sixth minute and converted his own try, but although he added a penalty six minutes before the break, the Dogs could not add any more tries to put real scoreboard pressure on the Knights.

Trailing 8-0 on the verge of half-time, centre Peter Mata'utia crashed over next to the posts after a quick tap, and suddenly the Knights went in behind by only two points.

With 26 minutes left, an increasingly confident Knights outfit went in again, spreading the ball to the left for Chanel Mata'utia to run round and score. The conversion was missed, but Newcastle led 12-8.

The run of play was going against the home side, and the Knights scored again in the 61st minute to grab control of the game. A grubber through was perfectly touched down by Peter Mata'utia for his second of the match.

Needing quick points the Bulldogs started to throw the ball around, but they couldn't make the breakthrough until Marcelo Montoya dived over for a try with four minutes left to give life to the contest.

Canterbury still trailed 18-14, but with the Knights holding out, Moses Mbye was put into space and he ran away to score, sending the Belmore crowd into ecstacy.

Holland converted to give the Bulldogs the lead, but with the last kick of the game the Knights had a chance to send things to golden point with a penalty from the sideline.

Brock Lamb's boot deserted him, however, and he shanked it wide, handing victory to the home side.

More to come.
