Bulky waste collection began on Wednesday for Gungahlin and Tuggeranong residents.

One thousand households have signed up since bookings for the free service opened on July 1.

Each household will get one free collection per year, up to two cubic metres.

The service was previously only free to concession card holders and will be rolled out to other Canberra regions over the next four years.

Belconnen, Molonglo and Hall are next in line and can expect collection to start in the next 12 months.

Woden Valley and Weston Creek are due for 2022-23 and the Inner North and Inner South in 2023-24.

Residents are urged to ensure they only dispose of acceptable items, including furniture, whitegoods, building material and electrical equipment with batteries removed.

Household chemicals, glass and mirrors, tyres and garden waste can not be discarded in bulky waste collection.
