Bulgaria and England BOTH hit with UEFA charges as hosts face racism rap

Bulgaria and England have both been hit with UEFA charges following last night's Euro 2020 qualifier in Sofia.

The game was marred by racist chanting and fascist salutes from some sections of the home support, and the game had to be halted twice as a result.

Following the shameful incidents Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihailov resigned, under pressure from government officials.

This afternoon UEFA has confirmed that Bulgaria have been hit with four charges, including racist behaviour in the form of "chants" and "Nazi salutes".

They've also been charged with throwing of objects, disrupting the English national anthem and showing replays on a giant screen, which contravenes  Art. 42 of the UEFA Safety and Security Regulations.

England have also been charged after the game, with the FA to answer charges of disrupting the national anthem and failing to provide a sufficient number of travelling stewards.

It has not yet been decided when the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will sit to discuss the charges.

Gareth Southgate's side won the match 6-0, with Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling scoring a double.

Ross Barkley got a double of his own to add to goals by Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane.

Turkey are also facing an investigation into "potential provocative political behaviour" against France and Albania, after players gave what appeared to be military salutes.
