Bukayo Saka will hope to buck trend involving Arsenal's previous Players of the Season

Bukayo Saka was a shining light in an overall dismal season for Arsenal.

The Gunners finished eighth in the Premier League, failing to qualify for Europe for the first time in 25 years.

At times Saka, along with fellow Hale End graduate Emile Smith-Rowe, carried the club on their backs with a number of senior players failing to perform at the standard you would expect.

Therefore, Saka was voted Arsenal's 2020/21 Player of the Season, capturing a whopping 51% of the vote share to stave off competition from Nicolas Pepe and Kieran Tierney.

The English wonderkid showcased his exceptional vision, intelligent decision making and composed finishing to register 7 goals and 7 assists across all competitions for the Gunners, an impressive feat for a teenager.

However, Saka will be hoping to avoid the trend that recent winners of the award have fallen victim to.

The prize has been won by the likes of Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas in the past but Arsenal fans noticed winners in the last few years have had a disappointing season the year after claiming it.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was voted the Gunners' player of the season after a stellar 2019/20 campaign in which he scored 29 goals to help fire Arsenal to their record 14th FA Cup, bagging two a brace in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the final.

The Gabonese frontman then endured a difficult campaign this time around, scoring just 14 goals, less than half the tally that he managed just 12 months prior.

The winner of the 2018/19 award, Alexandre Lacazette, faced a similar fate.

Lacazette enjoyed life during Unai Emery's first season in North London, registering a combined 32 goals and assists across all competitions to secure the prize.

However, the French striker was inconsistent the following term, failing to score a league goal away from the Emirates until April as he recorded just 19 goal contributions in 2019/20.

Saka will be hoping he can stop the trend next season and continue his remarkable consistency in the Arsenal team.

Before then he will feature for England in this summer's European Championship after he was included in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the tournament.
