Bukayo Saka unfazed by speculation as Arsenal star proves worth to Mikel Arteta

Bukayo Saka insists his focus is solely on his on-field performances and he will leave it to his representatives to "sort out" a new contract with Arsenal.

Saka has 18 months left to run on his first professional contract at Arsenal and, as football.london revealed in June, he is a long-standing target of Borussia Dortmund. He has also been linked to Manchester United and Liverpool.

For their part Arsenal are understood to be optimistic that the 18-year-old will agree new terms that will see him receive a significant increase on his current £7,000-a-week salary.

Saka, who with eight assists in all competitions this season is Arsenal's leading provider of goals, has established himself as a key cog for Mikel Arteta and it is footballing matters, not new terms, where his attention lies.

Jens Lehmann explains Arsenal's 'mediocre' results

"It's for my agent," Saka told football.london when asked about a new contract. "They're sorting it out.

"Of course I'm enjoying my football, enjoying playing under the new coach so we'll see what happens."

That Saka has been excelling is all the more impressive as it comes in an unfamiliar role for the youngster. Though he has played at left-back for England's youth sides his preferred position is further up the flank.

He is, however, making the most of his left-back berth and performing well enough that Mikel Arteta opted to continue with Saka at left-back even when he had Sead Kolasinac available for Sunday's 4-0 win over Newcastle.

Throughout the match Saka darted forward with abandon, his overlapping runs freeing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to dart infield and the youngster to instead probe his opponent's weaknesses out wide.

Saka did so in superb fashion, brilliantly nutmegging Valentino Lozaro with "a little chilli" before squaring the ball to Nicolas Pepe for Arsenal's second goal.

His long-term future may lie further forward but Saka is making the most of the starting opportunity Arteta has presented him.

"I'm really enjoying my football under the new manager. It's not my natural position but he's given me all the advice I need.

"I've got Granit [Xhaka] behind, David [Luiz] supporting and speaking to me so it gives me licence to go and express myself in the final third and do what I can do.

"I learned a lot about how wingers in the Premier League play against defenders and how to position myself because in his system it's different. I get to play much higher because the winger comes inside and I get to go. There's a lot of space for me and it's good for me.

"I'm playing sort of as a winger when we have the ball but without the ball I have to come back and work on my clearances, my heading and stuff I haven't worked on my whole life. I feel like I'm doing ok right now.

"I feel like my dream was always to be a winger, to affect games, score goals and get assists. For now I'll do the job the manager asks me to."

Indeed Saka is determined to learn all he can from his sojourn in defence.

"In the future if I do get to go back onto the wing I feel like I know how full-backs play and playing as a full-back I know what wingers do, what I like them to do and what I don't like them to do," he said.

"It's a good learning experience for me."

Arsenal are increasingly hopeful that he will be applying what he learns at left-back with them for many years to come.
