Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka has retained his place in England’s starting XI for this evening’s Euro 2020 round of 16 clash against Germany at Wembley, with Chelsea's Mason Mount named among the substitutes following more than a week in self-isolation.
Manager Gareth Southgate has decided to change to a three-man defence that will match up with Germany’s system and there is no place in the 11 for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish or the Manchester City attacker Phil Foden.
Saka, who won the player of the match award in last Tuesday's 1-0 win over Czech Republic, will start on the right of a front three featuring captain Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, who scored both goals in the group stage.
Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier has been drafted in at right wing back instead of Chelsea's Reece James, with Luke Shaw on the opposite side as Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice continue in central midfield.
Speaking before the game Southgate had indicated concern over the psychological frame of mind around Mount and Ben Chilwell, the third-choice left back who was also forced to quarantine having been deemed a close contact of clubmate Billy Gilmour after the draw with Scotland. Chilwell is not even on the bench for today's game.
"Clearly it's really complicated because there's the physical periodisation that you would want for a game like this,” he said. “Then there's the tactical training. Meetings we've had, they have to be in a separate room and dial in on zoom. The whole experience for them, including travelling down tonight is very, very difficult.
"But they are young players who can get on with things pretty well. It's a decision I've got to take when we're looking at how they've been able to train and everything else. There's a lot wrapped up in that call."
Chelsea's Toni Rudiger has been named in Germany's defence despite overnight concerns overa mild illness with clubmate Timo Werner making his first start of the tournament in an attack also featuring Kai Havertz.
