Bukayo Saka's Newcastle link Arsenal fans won't expect as brutal Lazaro comment resurfaces again

Bukayo Saka stole the show on his first Euro 2020 start for England - and you can bet his Newcastle United supporting father was there to cheer him on at Wembley.

The talented teenager was deservedly named star of the match by UEFA after a fine performance in the Three Lions' 1-0 win against the Czech Republic.

Gareth Southgate had told Saka to go out there and express himself, like he does for Arsenal, and the Londoner certainly did that.

Relishing the freedom afforded to him by his manager, the remarkably composed 19-year-old repeatedly drove at the Czechs' defence and played a crucial role in Raheem Sterling's decisive goal.

Not only did Saka launch the counter-attack that took England up the field in the build-up; the winger, crucially, also went on to occupy both Tomas Kalas and Ondrej Celustka when Jack Grealish floated a cross to the far post, which the unmarked Sterling nodded in with 12 minutes on the clock.

Saka completed more take ons (five) than any other England player in a single game at this summer's Euros and the joint most by an English teenager at a major tournament from the data Opta have collated since the 1966 World Cup and the 1980 European Championships.

Saka has now given Southgate a welcome selection headache ahead of the Three Lions' last 16 tie against Germany next week and, perhaps, it would be a surprise if the youngster was dropped.

Saka had already impressed Southgate in training, after all, and the England boss had seriously considered unleashing the versatile youngster earlier in the tournament.

Newcastle assistant Graeme Jones, who is part of England's backroom team at the Euros, is understood to be an admirer and, believe it or not, the Saka family have a link to the Magpies.

Indeed, one of the first games Saka remembers attending as a young boy was Newcastle's trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.

Saka was in the away end that day because his father is a Newcastle supporter and loves Alan Shearer.

Newcastle fans, of course, already know all about Saka's talents and the Arsenal academy graduate really caught the eye in the Gunners' 4-0 win against the Magpies at the Emirates last year.

Saka nutmegged Valentino Lazaro before cutting the ball back to Nicolas Pepe for Arsenal's second goal that day in February, 2020.

In an interview with Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp after the game, Saka simply said 'Whoops!' as they watched the footage back of his outrageous piece of skill.

Neil Dewsnip, who coached Saka for England's under-18s side, describes the youngster as 'really quiet, self-disciplined and really focused' but 'underlying all that is a really dry sense of humour'.

“When you see him do things like putting it through Valentino Lazaro’s legs and joking about it after, that doesn’t surprise me because, in the nicest possible way, he’s a cheeky little chap, whose self-confidence is obviously growing all the time," Dewsnip told the Athletic this week.
