Bukayo Saka, Granit Xhaka: Arsenal injury news ahead of Premier League clash with Aston Villa

Arsenal had to settle for a point as they hosted Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.

But the game appeared to hinge on an injury, after Bukayo Saka was forced off following what appeared to be a horrible challenge by Palace midfielder, James McArthur.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead early on but from then on Palace were the better side as Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard struck in the second half to seemingly win the game – only for substitute Alexandre Lacazette to level at the death.

With a clash against Aston Villa right around the corner, Mikel Arteta now has a couple of injury issues to contend with.

football.london takes a closer look at how the Gunners' squad is looking ahead of that game on Friday night.

Granit Xhaka

Arsenal had a relatively injury-free squad going into the clash against the Eagles, with Swiss captain Granit Xhaka their only long-term injury concern.

Xhaka suffered a nasty knee injury during a freak collision with Tottenham forward Lucas Moura, a clash that is likely to keep the deep-lying playmaker out for the next couple of months, leaving Arteta short of midfield options.

What Arteta has said: "With Granit, I don’t know, but I’m sure that if you tell him three [months], he will be thinking two [months].

"He will be trying to do extra work to try to minimise that time, that’s for sure.

"We have to do it in the right way because it’s a significant injury and we want to have him back properly when he can."

Expected return date: Mid-November.

Gabriel Martinelli

Arteta also said before the Palace match that Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli was a doubt, with the 20-year-old picking up a minor injury in training.

What Arteta has said: "Unfortunately he got injured last week," he said ahead of the game. "It’s a minor injury, we don’t know if he’s going to be available for Monday."

But he appears to be on the mend after coming on in the second half against Palace.

Bukayo Saka

England international Bukayo Saka seemed to suffer a nasty injury during the draw with Palace.

Just minutes before the break, Saka was brought down by Crystal Palace's James McArthur as he appeared to swipe the legs of the Arsenal player from behind.

McArthur picked up a booking for the offence, but Saka had to be substituted at half-time.

The club is yet to make an official statement on the injury just yet, but Arteta did give an update after the game which gave some indication of how serious it may be.

What Arteta has said: “We had to take [Saka] off because he could not continue,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “He was very sore in the area. When I look at the action I cannot understand how the [Palace] player can continue playing.”

Expected return date: Unknown.
