Bukayo Saka and William Saliba handed new Arsenal shirt numbers for 2020-21 season

Bukayo Saka and William Saliba have been earmarked as key men in Mikel Arteta's Arsenal rebuild.

And both have been handed squad numbers for the new season that further hint at the pair being absolutely integral to the Gunners' future.

Saka has enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign at Arsenal.

The 18-year-old has been arguably the biggest bright spot for the Gunners during the 2019-20 season.

Saka, who made his first-team debut in the Europa League in 2018, has made 38 appearances during the current campaign, scoring four times.

The England Under-19 international has also registered more assists than any other Arsenal player this term.

Operating at left back, wing-back, in central midfield or as part of the front three, he has teed up a teammate to find the net on 11 occasions.

Mikel Arteta has increasingly trusted the Ealing-born youngster, and he was recently rewarded with a new long-term contract at the club - amid interest from a host of Premier League and European rivals.

"I think he is the player that represents every value at the football club," said Arteta after Saka was handed his new deal.

"It was really important to keep him and from now I will demand more from him."

Now, Saka has been further rewarded with a new squad number for next term.

He will forego the No.77 he has been wearing since his breakthrough, and has been challenged to follow in the footsteps of club icons like Liam Brady, David Rocastle and Robert Pires, by being handed the No.7 shirt.

Incoming French youngster William Saliba has also had his shirt number for next season confirmed too.

The centre-back, returning after a season-long loan deal at Saint Etienne, will wear the No.4 shirt.

Saliba has impressed on loan with his boyhood club, and will return with Arteta looking for him to make a centre-back spot his own from the outset.

Mohamed Elneny, the previous owner of the No.4, will revert to No.25.
