Building work starts on Yate Park and Ride as launch timeframe announced

Work has started on a Park and Ride in Yate.

The site, next to South Gloucestershire Council offices on Badminton Road, will include 192 parking spaces, 38 electric vehicle charging points and up to 46 bike spaces.

There will be bus stops at the Park and Ride itself as well as new lay-bys on Badminton Road, connected by a new traffic light-controlled crossing.

Serving people travelling into Bristol and Yate, the project is expected to be complete around late summer or early autumn.

"Bus services, including the Y1, are already being lined up to use the site, and discussions with providers are ongoing to secure further commitments," said a South Gloucestershire Council spokesman.

"In order to retain a natural and inviting environment, and in support of the council’s Climate Emergency declaration, the council will also be retaining all trees on the site, putting them into safe storage while development works take place and replanting them around the Park and Ride once work is complete."

The council hopes the scheme will reduce congestion in the area and link up with use of Yate railway station.

Construction started this week, following the approval of planning permission in November, with the support of the Secretary of State.

The £3.5million funding has been secured from the West of England Combined Authority.

Council leader Toby Savage said: “With the delivery of the Park and Ride finally underway, we are taking a big step forward in getting the region moving and providing wider support for sustainable methods of transport across South Gloucestershire.

"Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, I am proud we are in a position where we can progress construction on site safely and look forward to seeing the Park and Ride active later this year.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall added: “Having campaigned for several years for a new Yate Park and Ride, a major part of my Positive Plan for Transport in the area, I am delighted that building work has now begun."
