By the end of 2013 Unilever had provided help and training to 570,000 smallholder farmers. Through a commitment to sourcing sustainably – in particular cocoa, tea and vanilla – the company is strengthening smallholder farming, as shown in the infographic above.
Unilever found that helping smallholder farmers improve their practices, by giving them access to better-quality seeds, training and fertilisers, means they can double or even triple their yields. The company will continue to expand the number of smallholders reached with training and increase its investment.
Dirk Jan de With, vice president of ingredients & sustainability said:
"In April 2014, Unilever announced that it is stepping up its enhancing livelihoods programme. This includes plans to improve food security by championing sustainable agriculture, and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers who produce 80% of the food in Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. This infographic shows some great examples which will continue to grow over the next few years."
